What if the ways you’ve learned to manage your emotions are actually keeping you stuck?

For the first time, Dr. Leslie Greenberg, who has studied emotion for nearly 50 years, has created a project intended for a general audience.

Your Emotions: A User’s Guide is a 12-episode podcast intended for a general audience that Les created with emotion-focused therapist Michele Carroll. In each episode they share a common-sense emotion principle for helping you understand how emotions work, and how your emotions can work for you.

In this series of 12 conversations, Les and Michele offer a practical user’s guide to understanding your emotional system and working with emotions to change how you feel from the inside out. Along the way, they also challenge the current over-emphasis on coping and emotion regulation that can sometimes actually keep us stuck in anxiety, depression, and trauma symptoms.

Each episode also includes an “emotional navigation tip” exercise led by Dr. Greenberg so that viewers and listeners can try out the principles for themselves.

Emotion principles include:

What we resist persists • Emotions come first • Insight is not enough • Emotions are our navigation system • Too much coping, not enough healing • Listen to your gut • You have to feel it to heal it • Don’t just do something, sit there • The way to change emotion is with emotion • You are your own worst enemy — and best friend • You can heal your family inside yourself • Plus a final episode on putting it into practice
